Machine Knit Ear Flap Hat

There are many ways to make this hat with ear flaps. I will show you one of them.

Or find a pattern that you like or have used on your knitting machine.

Now look at your cast on stitches. I will be using a simple one but you can use your own pattern.

So as in the photo, I have 80 stitches to cast on, you will divide that in quarters, which is twenty.

Take one section of that and divide that in half for the two back sections. Click on photo to see full size.

Next if the original pattern has a rib brim, that is omitted but will do a folded hem with the ear flaps worked in on the fold part of this.

In my video I worked 20 rows. Then I need to get to the first ear flap, so I will put all but the first thirty stitches to Hold and set the carriage to Hold also.

Knit one row to the left.

Put the left ten stitches to Hold and the remainder twenty stitches will be for the ear flap.

*Now to short row down, I take the needle that is in WP on the carriage side and put to HP, Knit across.

Repeat that until you have approximately four stitches in WP. Now to reverse short row.

I like to wrap my yarn under the next needle in WP so that it closes that off and will not have an eyelets, but you don't have to do that. Take the needle on the inside opposite the carriage from HP to FWP and Knit across.

Repeat until the last row that will be knitted from left to right. This time you will need to take the needles on the right from HP to FWP, knit to the right.*

I need to get the carriage to the left, so I take my carriage off of Hold and knit across.

You will repeat from * to * for the other ear flap but reversing some of it.

I am now at my bottom fold of the folded hem.

I can start doing some Fair Isle here for just the outside folded hem or continue that up to the top of the hat.

Where I knitted 20 rows for the inside of the folded hem, I need to do the same here. If needed, reset your counter to zeros.

Take the first row, whether it was a closed cast on or live stitches to close the folded hem.

From here I know knit 32 rows.

Next I need to decrease in half, Take EON and transfer that over to the next, your choice if going to the left or right.

Then I knit 3 rows then do a gathering bind off. I do cut at least 2 lengths of the needles in work to sew up the seam.

Once that is done, weave in the yarn tails or small knot two together and hide in between the folded hem.

You can now leave that as is or you can do an I-Cord or sew in some ribbon for ties.

As someone had mentioned to me, one can just knit up 3 stitches back and forth, no need to slip the stitches one way and knit the other way. The piece will curl and create that tie. I will add that it would be good to do those at a lower tension dial setting to make the stitches tighter and it will curl for sure.

Add a pom-pom if you please and let the person enjoy their new Ear Flap Hat.
